How Does Uber Insurance Work?

Uber Accident Lawyer

With millions of Uber drivers all across the U.S who use this service to generate income, it is not surprising that people want to know more about Uber’s insurance policy. Drivers are essentially operating their own small businesses. This means that they need insurance to protect their businesses and reduce their financial liability.

This is why Uber offers its own “Driver-Partner Insurance”. The sad truth though is that this insurance comes with several coverage gaps.

What Is Rideshare Insurance?

Rideshare insurance provides coverage for you and your vehicle when driving for a rideshare service such as Uber. It will kick in as soon as you turn on the app. Now, your personal auto insurance provider may drop your policy if they discover you’ve been driving without separate rideshare coverage.

How Does Uber Insurance Work?

Most rideshare companies including Uber will provide specific rideshare insurance for drives up to the state limits. It really will depend on your state on if you need separate rideshare insurance or not. The thing to remember with Uber is that it will not cover you if the app is closed. During these times your personal auto policy is what you are using.

When the app is open though, Uber’s policy covers you at certain points during your trip. Thre are three main coverage periods insures use to separate a rideshare trip:

Period 1: The Uber app is one but you are waiting for a ride request.

Period 2: You’ve accepted a ride request and you are on your way to pick up a passenger.

Period 3: The passenger is in your car. This period ends when the passenger exits your car.

If you get into an accident while working for Uber you will need to know which period you were in when it happened. This is so your claim isn’t delayed or even denied by Uber itself.

What Coverage Uber Has

Uber’s insurance proves different levels of coverage across the three periods. There is a significant difference in whether a passenger is in your care or not.

If you are in the first period you can expect that the company won’t offer you comprehensive collision coverage. The coverage is going to be a liability and is roughly $50,000 in bodily injury per person and up to $100,000 in bodily injury per accident and $25,000 in property damage per accident.

If you are in the second and third periods then you will get the collision and comprehensive coverage with some caveats. Uber provides $1 million in third-party liability coverage. Now, the caveat here is that there is a $2,500 out-of-pocket before Uber coverage kicks in to cover your claim.

Getting the converge you need can be difficult. That is why we suggest talking to an Anaheim Uber accdient lawyer for more information, like our friends at Glotzer & Leib, LLP to better explain what you can expect from Uber and what your next steps should be.
